Day 2 of Day Camp 2023
The Daily Foreteller
Tuesday, July 18, 2023
The second day of the 2023 Renton Hills Day Camp was wacky hair day and featured many wonderful and wacky coiffures. The Pink Pixies even had a fashion show to show off their hairdos.
Double Potions
At our craft station they brainstormed what type of potion they would make and what ingredients they would need. Using two different watercolor techniques, they painted the potion bottles for each ingredient.
First, they made The Draught of Living Death, a sleeping potion that changed colors when mixed together. (In reality, a lesson in how red cabbage water reacts with different base and acidic liquids)
The second potion was a Swelling Solution, that expands when the final ingredient is added. (Baking soda, dish soap and vinegar)
And finally, they made a non-Newtonian fluid called Oobleck (cornstarch and water) in their very own cauldrons, which they brought home.
Knotcraft
In Knotcraft, they learned square knots, overhand knots, how to tie a bowline, a lark’s head and two half hitches. They also worked with a special knot practice board made by our own Defense Against the Dark Arts specialist Q.
Defense Against the Dark Arts
Nine of our campers scored bullseyes in Defense Against the Dark Arts today! They continue to improve their stance, the way they hold the bow and their accuracy.
Incendio
Today we also had a special Charms lesson, covering the Incendio spell, where campers learned the proper way to build a fire, light matches and use a flit and steel.
Outdoor Cooking
Every day a camp a different unit has a special lesson on campfire cooking. Today our Light Blue Leprechauns made cookies using a cardboard oven. We had yet another amazing feast at the three broomsticks where we enjoyed Muggle Mexi Bar with quesadillas and beef tacos.
Our full day ended with a little water fun in the field where each unit raced to transfer their potions from one bucking to another. Unfortunately, all their cups had holes in them. Our Purple Pegasi were victories and may have inched into first place in the race for the house cup.
Our PAs continued their magical spell of fun and laughter at camp. They are hardworking Prefects who make every day "charmed"!
